Taipei, Taiwan is the capital of the Republic of China on the island of Taiwan. It is located on the Danshui River, in northern Taiwan, about 20 kilometers from the Pacific Ocean coastline and the Taiwan Strait. Historically, Taipei has been an important overseas trade center, and industrial powerhouse. More recently, it has become the center of government, culture, and commerce in Taiwan.
Visiting Taipei is all about excitement. The city itself is a bustling metropolis filled with vigor, great food and a thrilling nightlife. While the city is bustling, the outlying area is filled with natural splendor. Hiking in the majestic mountains that surround the city, and visiting the local Yangmingshan National Park are excellent natural getaways. Heritage sights (Fort San Domingo (built in 1629) and the Longshan Temple) are also popular in Taipei.
