Mexico City, Mexico, is one of the largest metropolitan areas in the world, with a population of approximately 25 million people. More than 100 museums, galleries and cultural centers feature collections of art, history, science and archeology that record the past of the world’s oldest continually inhabited city.
When Spanish missionaries converted the native people in the 1600s, they tore down the Aztec temples and used the stone to build a church in Mexico City. In the late 16th century, construction began on the Metro Cathedral, the oldest and largest cathedral in Latin America. The original church was tore down in 1628. When the cathedral was completed in the early 17th century, the building was a magnificent example of baroque, neoclassical and Mexican churrigueresque architecture.
There are five Aztec temples in Mexico City. Electrical workers discovered the ruin of Templor Mayor, the main temple of the Aztecs, in 1978. It is believed that the temple was the location where the Aztecs received a sign from their gods. The sign – an eagle sitting on a cactus eating a snake – is still the symbol of the Mexican nation. Visitors can tour the ruin and a covered museum houses Aztec artifacts.
