 The Whitcomb is a nice old hotel at the edges of a marginal neighborhood. It is a block and a half from City Hall, and a couple of blocks from the Opera House and that whole cultural area - but there is a large homeless population in the area around the hotel (and on down Market Street toward downtown). Is it unsafe? No. It is uncomfortable, though - but that goes for the area around most hotels flanking downtown. The rooms were clean, the staff was polite, and the workout room was adequate. If you can, skip renting a car (parking costs are outrageous), and rely on public trans instead - there is a BART station right outside the hotel.- 17-Apr-2008 The Hotel Whitcomb is a good choice in the sense that it is ideally located, close to the city center. The price is also very competitive.
The only downside was that the bed wasn't very good, didn't sleep really well. Another thing was that the mechanism for flashing the toilet was broken when I arrived but it was fixed immediately after my arrival.- 03-Apr-2008 When the price is right, this is the place to stay.
