The lobby is gorgeous with intricate carved wood and antique chandeliers. There is an attached restaurant and Starbucks. The rooms are on the small side but are comfortable. The room carpeting is a bit shabby and there were a few cracks at the top of the wall. The bathroom was clean but small. There were rusted drapery hooks above the bathroom window even though there were no curtains in there. The hotel is quite nice but they need a bit more attention to detail. The location is just a few blocks from the main downtown area and is convenient to the electric cars and Bart.- 20-Jan-2009 It's worth the price you paid. Too bad there's no breakfast included. Still it's worth it.- 31-May-2008 The Whitcomb is a nice old hotel at the edges of a marginal neighborhood. It is a block and a half from City Hall, and a couple of blocks from the Opera House and that whole cultural area - but there is a large homeless population in the area around the hotel (and on down Market Street toward downtown). Is it unsafe? No. It is uncomfortable, though - but that goes for the area around most hotels flanking downtown. The rooms were clean, the staff was polite, and the workout room was adequate. If you can, skip renting a car (parking costs are outrageous), and rely on public trans instead - there is a BART station right outside the hotel.- 17-Apr-2008 |
