Known officially as Frankfurt am Main, Frankfurt is considered to be Germany’s fifth largest city, based on population. Located on the Main River, Frankfurt is a thriving city with a strong finance industry base. Transportation is the area’s second biggest industry with Frankfurt International Airport touted as one of the busiest airports in the world. This is not the only “world’s largest/busiest” title held by the city, Frankfurt is host to the largest book fair in the world and the largest auto show in the world. Close to one million visitors converge on the city for the annual Frankfurt Motor Show every year filling most hotels in Frankfurt all year round.
Coming to Frankfurt, many travelers prefer to stay in the city center close to the area attractions, restaurants, and shopping areas. Savoy Hotel Frankfurt is not only in the heart of the action, but it is also across the street from the train station and near the Frankfurt Trade Fair. Excelsior Hotel Frankfurt is closer to the airport but still within easy reach of Frankfurt’s shopping district. Steigenberger Metropolitan Hotel Frankfurt is in the heart of the city and adjacent to the train station making it easy for travelers who are arriving by train.
Frankfurt Cathedral dates back to the 14th century and is one of the area’s hottest tourist attractions. A fire destroyed the cathedral in the 1800s, but restorations were completed ensuring the architecture remained identical. Most hotels in Frankfurt have information on the cathedral if you want to find out more about the main attraction. Frankfurt’s city hall is also impressive, and many flock to the city hall square (Romerberg) for a picnic lunch or sightseeing. Zeil is the major shopping district. The pedestrian-only streets are linked by two large shopping plazas where locals and tourists can look for bargains.
