Coober Pedy, Australia, is a remote town in northern South Australia, 846 kilometres north of Adelaide. It is the opal capital of the world, where the majority of the world's opals can be found. The town is well known for its underground buildings. Old opal mine excavation have been converted variously into family homes, churches, hotels and even museums. These underground dens caught on due to the extreme heat of the area; Coober Pedy is in the middle of a desert.
The township itself and the surrounding landscape are hauntingly beautiful. The unique environment has been used in a number of famous films, including Mad Max, Priscilla, Queen of the Desert and Red Planet. It is truly a unique area and a must-see part of Australia.
The Coober Pedy Golf Club has the distinction of being the only club in the world to have been bestowed with reciprocal rights at the prestigious Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews in Scotland. It was awarded the reciprocal rights due to correspondence between the two club regarding the lengths taken by locals in enjoying the game of golf. Play takes place at night, so to avoid the daytime heat, and with glowing golf balls. Players carry a small piece of "turf" for teeing off from, as the course is completely barren.
For an authentic experience, stay at the Desert Cave Hotel or the Comfort Inn. Both hotels are affordable, comfortable, and in true Coober Pedy style, are located underground.
