Enjoy a peaceful wilderness retreat in Arthur River, Australia, a remote coastal village in northwest Tasmania. Located at the mouth of Tasmania’s last wild river, the area is a prime spot for river and ocean fishing, canoeing, kayaking, birdwatching, fossicking and bushwalking.
One and two bedroom apartments with kitchens at the value-priced Arthur River Holiday Units are sited on the banks of Arthur River, just minutes from the beaches or rainforest. A tavern is located in Arthur River, as well as several 18th century sites, such as Six Mile Cottage, Old Kitchen Mount Pleasant Inn, St. Paul’s Church, and the police barracks and gaol.
The Arthur Wool Shed Group in Arthur River, listed on the Registration of Heritage Places, has been extensively restored and is now used as a community shearing shed. The shearing shed and the shearers’ quarters were built about 1910 of timber and iron. The concrete cricket pitch was also built about that time. In 1953, a sheep dip was built of bricks and concrete.
The Arthur Pieman Conservation Area covers about 100,000 hectares between Arthur River to the north, Pieman River to the south and Frankland and Donaldson Rivers to the east. Visitors can see hut depressions, artefact scatters and rock art of the aboriginal people. Fishing, swimming, diving and off-roading are other popular activities in the Conservation Area. The eco-tourism and forestry interpretation center is located on the rim of a sinkhole in Dismal Swamp, near Arthur River. The natural Blackwood forest sinkhole is thought to be the only one of its kind in the world. A cantilevered walkway suspended above the tree tops gives visitors a bird’s eye view of the forest. They can ride an electric buggy or walk to the bottom of the sinkhole. For those who are more adventurous, a 110-metre tube slide twists and turns from the viewing platform to the swamp floor.
