Country lifestyle meets urban atmosphere in Armidale, Australia, in the high tablelands of the Great Dividing Range. The home of the University of New England, Armidale has traditional and modern restaurants, shops and entertainment venues. The New England Regional Art Museum in Armidale holds more than 5,000 works of art, including an extensive collection of Australian art. It also features constantly changing traveling exhibits.
The Saumarez Homestead in Armidale was inhabited by British settlers in the 1830s. For several years, it was the last stopping point for travelers before they moved into “the great beyond”. Visitors can tour the fully furnished Edwardian mansion that was built in the late 1800s or early 1900 and other 19th century equipped with 19th century tools and implements. There are also several gardens, such as the cottage garden and the picking garden.
The Armidale Railway Museum memorializes the men who built the Great Northern Railway. The Armidale Railway Station was built in 1882 and the first train arrived at the station in February 1883. The railway buildings, with displays of tools, implements, trolleys and trikes, take visitors back to the age of steam engines. The cast iron work, ornamental chimneys and decorative mouldings on the buildings are typical of the period.
