Pack light, pack right.
I am an aspiring backpacker so I almost always use my trusty backpack.
What's inside my knapsack?
1. A number of CLOTHES, including underwears and socks, depending on the trip. I usually bring clothes that don't wrinkle easily and are fast drying in case I need or plan to wash my clothes.
2. TOILETRIES; such as travel size soap, shampoo and/or conditioner, facial wash, toothpaste, toothbrush, floss, razor, deodorant, comb, sanitary napkins (just in case) etc.; placed in an accessible toiletry bag.
3. A small TOWEL
4. My useful fave red SARONG
5. Black FLIP-FLOPS
6. Victorinox Swiss Army Knife
7. Travel documents, keys, cash, map, pen, paper, and other PERSONAL ELECTRONIC DEVICES
8. GUM and WATER

I'm glad my experience helped you in some way. I believe that packing right and packing light is perfected through experience.
If you plan to wash your clothes bring a small bar of laundry soap so you won't worry if stores at the place you ar going don't have your fave brand (specially if you have soap allergies) of laundry soap.
Wet tissue is a must have for me. It keeps my face moist and clean, and gives me a refreshing feeling. No water for washing your hands? Use a wet tissue. You see, it's very useful.
If you want to bring a book be sure that you'll read it because sometimes you end up enjoying the scenery or chatting with someone and you have regrets of bringing a book that you didn't read and most of all took a lot of space in your bag.
